On one of our own properties the dashboard reported roughly 150 unique visitors a day. That figure was arithmetically correct and completely wrong about demand.
The single most requested path on the site was an exploit probe for a platform the site does not even run, and it alone drew more requests than the home page. Most of what remained were declared crawlers. The interior pages, which is where real people go, were in single digits. The unique-visitor count was inflated precisely because the traffic was automated, since a distributed scanner presents one address per node and each is counted as a unique.
No total tells you that. Only the distribution across paths does, and reading it took ten minutes. The difference between those two readings is the difference between deciding you have a conversion problem and knowing you have a traffic problem, which are opposite pieces of work.
